Spain's Iberdrola is studying the possibility of building a combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Alange to keep up with soaring demand in the power-deficient Extremadura region of western Spain, a spokesman for the company said Wednesday. "It looks like an ideal place to build a CCGT," the spokesman said. It's ideal because it's the region in which Iberdrola operates which has seen highest demand growth." Despite obvious enthusiasm for the project, Spain's second largest power company ruled out bringing any new CCGT in Alange online until at least 2007. The plant is not contemplated as part of the company's 2002-2006 strategic plan and Iberdrola said it had not got as far as deciding on the capacity. The local government of Alange, which could have presented the biggest obstacle to the build, has welcomed the possible project which would create much needed mployment in one of the poorest regions of Spain. But any CCGT would also require central and regional government backing.
