US-based energy marketer El Paso is to continue
trading all the products it is currently active in from its London office, but has
begun to reduce staff numbers, El Paso managing director Jay Hellums told
Platts Thursday. Hellums denied reports from industry sources earlier in the
week that heads of trading desks may be the first to go. "We are not
letting any heads of trading go," he said. Hellums could not confirm
reports that El Paso was to make redundant 30 of its 140 staff, but said
"we are reducing staff here somewhat." He said El Paso has no plans
to withdraw from any of its European activities. He could not say how the
reduncancies would be spread across the company's London departments. "We'll
provide more details at a later stage," he said. On May 29, the company
said it was laying off half its 600 merchant energy staff worldwide.
