The Nordic power exchange Nord Pool is to launch trade in CO2 forwards contracts Feb 7, a spokesman said Thursday. The start date depends on whether the exchange has received its formal permit from Norway's financial services authority Kredittillsynet. "It is our intention to launch on Feb 7," he said. Nord Pool will begin to offer trade in four forward contracts with physical delivery in December 2005, March 2006, December 2006 and December 2007. The exchange began test trade with these products before Christmas. The spokesman declined to say whether it had signed up any market makers, or how many participants it was expecting from the start. Nord Pool also plans spot trade, but not before Mar 1. The exchange faces competition for business from mainly Germany's European Energy Exchange, which has delayed its launch of the CO2 contracts to end of February from Jan 3. Trade in European Union emission allowances is already taking place in the over-the-counter market.
