The ten new member states which are to join the European Union from May 1 will add just under 76GW to the EU's existing power generation capacity, figures by Germany's producers' association VDEW, as calculated by Eurelectric, showed Monday. This means the total generation capacity of the extended EU adds up to 677GW--the additional capacity of the new countries still being dwarfed by the exiting 601GW from the current EU. The figures, based on statistics from 2002, show that Poland has the largest amount of generation to contribute, with just under 31GW. The Czech Republic is to contribute just over 15GW, Slovakia is to extend the EU park by 7,800MW and Hungary is to contribute about 7,500MW. Cyprus and Malta will contribute almost 1,000MW and 600MW respectively. Germany's power generation capacity amounts to 106GW.
