The government of Spain's northwest Galicia region has approved construction of a 400kV power line that is to provide grid connection for the 800MW As Puentes CCGT planned by Endesa. The line, according to Spain's official state gazette, would run from the proposed power plant to the nearby Puentes de Garcia Rodriguez substation. Endesa hopes to complete the two-unit Puentes CCGT, to be located at the site of its existing 1,400MW As Pontes coal-fired plant in Coruna province, by year-end 2006. Besides the new generator, the Spanish power producer is investing Eur274-mil ($356-mil) to convert the coal plant to exclusively use imported coal and extend the installation's operational life until 2023. The four-unit power plant, which currently uses a mixture of domestic brown lignite and soft coal imported from the US and Indonesia, would have been forced to shut down towards year-end 2007 when local reserves were exhausted. The conversion is expected to be completed in 2008.
