Spain's Economy and Finance Ministry has approved a proposal by Union Fenosa to build an 800MW gas-fired, combined-cycle plant at Arteixo near La Coruna in the northwest Galicia region, the ministry said May 22 in the official state gazette. The approval is for two 400MW units which the company plans to install at the site of its 471MW oil-fired Sabon generator. One 400MW unit is to be completed in second-quarter 2006 and the second in the third-quarter of 2006, with the gas feedstock to be supplied via the Reganosa LNG import terminal currently under construction at nearby Mugardos. The regasification plant, with a 750,000 cu m/hr throughput, is expected to be completed in first-quarter 2006. Union Fenosa said in its latest strategic plan it expected to have 2.4GW of net domestic CCGT capacity by 2007.
