Spain's Economy Ministry has approved construction of a
1,600MW combined-cycle gas turbine plant planned by Iberdrola
at Arcos de la Frontera in the southern Andalucia region. The
authorization, announced Mar 24 in the official state gazette,
is for a combined project made up of a 1,200MW CCGT that
Enron had initially promoted and a 400MW unit that had
originally been proposed by Guadalcacin Energy, owned by
Spain's Abengoa. Iberdrola, which has budgetted Eur800-mil
($865-mil), for the 1,600MW installation, expects to put 800MW
on line by year-end 2004 and 800MW on line in the third-quarter
of 2005.
