UK energy minister Mike O’Brien Tuesday published the government’s preliminary consultation document outlining a number of options that could be taken to improve the effectiveness of the UK’s renewables obligation. The renewables obligation says that energy suppliers must source a set percentage of their energy from renewable sources, rising to 15% by 2015. The 2005/06 preliminary consultation document is being published alongside supporting research commissioned by independent consultants. This sets out a range of policy options to improve the effectiveness of the obligation, while avoiding changes to the obligation’s key operating principles. Among the key areas for review are: the effectiveness of the obligation since it began in April 2002 and measures to make it easier for smaller and microgenerators to benefit from the obligation.
