Financial penalties of £200,000 on both npower and Scottish Power were confirmed today (Friday) by energy regulator Ofgem, following a period of consultation. The penalties were initially proposed in December 2003 after some 9,000 direct debit customers were unfairly stopped from switching to a new gas or electricity supplier. Ofgem Chairman, Sir John Mogg, said: "This was a clear abuse of the special rules surrounding the position of customers in debt. Our decision will demonstrate to all energy companies that we will not tolerate any bad practices which damage customer confidence in the competitive energy markets. "Consumers can save a lot of money by switching supplier. We do not want to see anyone put off exercising their right to choose a new supplier."
