Power cuts in Portugal's medium voltage power grid fell by 9% in duration over the first nine months of this year, compared to the same period of 2002 after heavy investments in the network, Electricidade de Portugal said Friday. The total length on supply interruptions between January and September was 239 minutes, down from 264 minutes in the first nine months of 2002. The figures do not include 30 minutes of power supply interruptions caused by the fires that swept across the country over the summer, EdP said. The 30% state-owned power company said the reduction in the length of power cuts was the result of investment and greater efficiency in grid maintenance. "We are betting heavily on preventative maintenance which allows us to avoid a significant number of potential problems and plan corrective action to improve the performance of the grid," the company said.
