British energy regulator Ofgem plans to align the timetables of its transmission price controls on gas and electricity networks, it said Tuesday. This would save duplication of work. To align the price controls, Ofgem is going to need to extend Scottish transmission price controls by two years and extend National Grid's transmission control by one year, so that new price controls for all areas could start at the same time in April 2007. But Ofgem is considering splitting gas transmission from distribution, so that the distribution price controls for gas would next be changed in April 2008. In electricity transmission and distribution are already considered separately. Ofgem wants comments on the plan by Dec 19, 2003. National Grid Transco, which operates the British power and gas transmission networks, said that it welcomed the move. "Having integrated our gas and electric transmission operations, aligning the timing of price controls is helpful to us," said NGT CEO Roger Urwin. National Grid, the power operator, merged with Transco, the gas operator, in 2002.
