Spanish grid operator Red Electrica hopes to bring forward by several years the opening of the 400kV Transmanchega power
link between Albacete and Ciudad Real scheduled for 2011, REE said Wednesday. The link, in the Castilla-La Mancha region of
Spain, which has suffered some congestion in the past, had been expected to come into service in 2011. REE is working to
bring the new link online sooner on the request of the government of the autonomous region. Nevertheless, a spokeswoman for the grid company said the time scale the local government had suggested was "very optimistic." Iberdrola vice president Ignacio Galan, who met with REE president Pedro Mielgo and the president of Castilla-La Mancha at the opening of Iberdrola's CORE renewable energy control center in Toledo Tuesday, said the link would improve the quality of supply in the region. The link between the central and eastern provinces would also benefit the national transmission system as the increasingly matrixed grid would help alleviate bottlenecks in transfer to the power-deficient south.
