Syria’s government on Tuesday voted to join the Kyoto Protocol. The oil-producing Middle Eastern country could have a significant CDM potential if it can apply the gas flaring methodology approved by the CDM Executive Board for the Vietnamese Rang Dong project.
The oil and gas industry is responsible for the lion’s share of carbon dioxide emissions in Syria, which has only a very small manufacturing industry. Syria is estimated to have produced 460,000 barrels a day in 2004, according to the US energy information agency, out of a global total of 84 million barrels. In 2003, Syria produced about 245 billion cubic feet of natural gas, up sharply from 205 billion cubic feet in 2002. The OPEC countries decided to ratify the Kyoto Protocol when it became clear that it would enter into force. Earlier this year oil producing countries such as Nigeria, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Algeria have all ratified.
