Spain's economy ministry has authorized big four power producer Endesa's plans to construct a 400MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant at Huelva in the southern Andalucia region. The approval, announced Thursday in the official state gazette, follows Environment Ministry blessing for the project and Economy Ministry permission to dismantle the three-unit, 376MW oil-fired Cristobal Colon power plant at Huelva, site of the planned CCGT unit. The 400MW replacement generator, budgeted at around Eur170-mil ($189-mil), is scheduled to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2005. Also planned for the Huelva area is an 800MW CCGT at Palos de la Frontera that domestic rival Union Fenosa hopes to bring online by year-end 2005.
