Italian companies would be allowed to build and manage nuclear power plants abroad and then import the energy to
Italy under a measure approved Wednesday by Italy's lower house, the chamber of deputies. Such a deal would in part
alleviate the country's ongoing power supply crisis. However, the measure still requires approval by the country's upper
house, the Senate. Italian power group Enel has already expressed a strong interest in investing in French nuclear
plants through a deal with EdF. Italian companies were prohibited from such activity under a 1988 Italian referendum
banning investment in nuclear power. Deputies voted Wednesday on scores of amendments and articles proposed
under the government's energy sector reorganization law.
