Spanish power use falls 0.6%: UNESA

Power use in Spain fell 0.6% year on year to 29.819TWh in the year to Feb 15, according to data released Monday by the power producer association UNESA. In the Jan 1 to Feb 15 period of last year power demand was 29.993TWh. Total production rose 0.3% to 26.155TWh in first six weeks of 2004, compared with 26.086TWh in the same period of 2003. Ordinary power production rose 0.7% to 24.508TWh, up from 24.339TWh in the first six weeks of last year, while special regime producers increased power supplies by 2.7% to 5.786TWh. Special regime producers met 19.4% of total peninsular demand for power during the period. After an unusually damp winter 2002/2003, hydropower production in the first six weeks of 2004 was down 32.6% to 5.396TWh, compared to 8.010TWh in the same period of last winter. Output from thermal power plants rose 28.1% to 12.287TWh to compensate for the lack of hydropower, while nuclear power production edged down 0.2% to 8.472TWh.
