Spain's environment ministry has approved a 400kV, double-circuit link with Portugal proposed by Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana. The authorization, according to a notice published Wednesday in Spain's official state gazette, is for a 40.5km high voltage line running from the Balboa substation in Badajoz province to the Portuguese border. In Portugal, the line is to connect to the domestic grid at Alqueva. The project, budgeted at Eur10-mil ($12.8-mil), is expected to be completed by the end of 2004 and forms part of a intergovernmental plan to raise cross-border capacity in an effort to facilitate the creation of a Iberian peninsula power market. Currently, there are two 400kV and three 220kV links between Spain and Portugal.
